Born to Ethiopian parents in Scarborough, Chxrry22 is a fearless new voice with limitless talent and divine vocals. As a member of The Weeknd’s label XO, she is actively pursuing her dreams in Atlanta, having released her debut EP The Other Side earlier this fall.
To make a bold move and simultaneously pay tribute to her label’s leader, she released a sultry cover of Abel’s Dawn FM track titled Sacrifice” in November of this year. Chxrry22’s duality shines on this cover through the delivery of a perfect blend of atmospheric beats and alluring vocals. She strips away all traces of disco-funk production to completely alter the spirit of the song, stepping away from Abel’s signature hedonism and bringing forward a sense of true vulnerability.
Ever so fearless, the cover is a brave and successful continuation of the sentiment created by Chxrry22’s earlier launch, The Other Side. When describing the project, she states that “[the EP” is about coming to terms with duality”, which is embodied perfectly in her choice to take a modern 80s-inspired post-disco track and strip it down to a slowed down, angelic rendition.
