If you enjoyed the album Before Love Came To Kill Us earlier this year, then you are in for a surprise. One of our favourite Canadian artists, Jessie Reyez, has shared two new songs as part of an extended version of her 17-track album Before Love Came To Kill Us+. Her original album which came out in March was met with critical acclaim as fans loved her views of love, heartbreak and relationships.

‘No One’s in The Room’ and ‘Sugar at Night’ released on September 25th via FMLY/Island Records. The release of Before Love Came To Kill Us+ was accompanied by a music video for ‘No One’s in The Room’ directed by Emma Higgins. ‘No One’s in The Room’ is a powerful piece that focusses on self-identity and individuality. In her song, she echoes, “Who am I when no one’s in the room?” emphasizing the way people change who they are when no one is around. In the music video, symbolism of strength, consciousness and one’s life purpose can be seen throughout as the artists explains. She goes on to say that months ago, she was questioning her own identity and her own life, and that’s how this song was created. In the words of her label, the overall goal is to “empower listeners to explore their deepest fears surrounding identity.” On the other hand, ‘Sugar at Night’ compares a toxic partner to eating sweets before bed. It explores the difficulties of being with a partner so toxic, as the chorus says, “You’re like sugar at night. You’ll never make me a bride. You just give me fight scenes.”

This Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter has had a successful year so far. Reyez’s debut album was praised by notable media outlets such as The New York Times, Time, Variety and many more. Her debut has gained over 350M in global streams, thus earning her nomination for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize for best Canadian album. The album will be competing with nine other titles from Kaytranada to U.S Girls and more. The winner will be announced on October 19 via the CBC.

In addition to this, she has earned Top R&B album of 2020, Top Female Debut Album, and charted in the Top 5 on Billboard’s R&B album chart where it continues to remain. She has also made impressive cameos on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon! where she performed ‘Kill Us’, Jimmy Kimmel Live! where she sang ‘Crazy’, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert where she did a duet performance of her song ‘Imported’ with 6LACK. Not to mention, her cameo in Beyonce’s Black is King visual album and her performance on Toronto’s CN Tower during the NBA Playoffs.
