This Friday morning, Toronto-based singer/songwriter and pianist Tasha Angela released her new track “Déjà Vu”.

Tasha treats her ability to create music as a healing form, incorporating observations and elements related to her past, often shown in a reminiscent dream-like music video. She magically captures the intrinsic nature and indispensable quality of our memories of the past and the warm innocence of childhood.

She evokes this into the emotion, familiarity, and mindfulness of her music in hopes that self-improvement will resonate with herself and listeners via an infectious chorus. For fans of Jorja Smith, Solange, and Corinne Bailey Rae, Tasha Angela’s butter-like vocals and soul-baring vibrations are something to note.

“Déjà Vu” is a disco-like visual piece allowing viewers to join a prismatic road trip of pink pastel and neon to view inside Tasha’s reflective thoughts.

“Déjà Vu’ is about repeating the same mistakes over and over until finally learning the lesson. I have gone through many moments when I wouldn’t trust my intuition, thus taking me back to where I started and using ‘Déjà Vu’ as a metaphor for representing the feeling and mood that resonates the most with me. I wanted to make sure that listeners can relate their situations to the lyrics no matter what it is and love the song’s feel. I wrote Deja Vu at a time in my life when I started to realize unhealthy patterns but also became more aware of them and started to change for the better.

Drawing inspiration from Alicia Keys, India Arie, Will I Am, and Lady Gaga, Tasha found her place in R&B and soul because “that’s the way that it translates into with the words and melodies that I hear in my head.” Tasha says.

Tasha’s career began to take flight at Jessie Reyez’s songwriting camp in early 2019. Shortly after, Tasha’s experiential writing skills and knack for chorus writing led to her captivate The Asylum distributor and a bond with fellow Canadian musician Dan Kurtz (Dragonette & The New Deal) and his studio.

In company with The Asylum, Tasha worked with producer/arranger Sam “Avenue” Willows (Carousel, Dragonette, Tokyo Police Club). She released her first single in October 2019 ‘Lost in Nostalgia”, and followed shortly after with her first official five-song EP, “Hidden Gems” in February 2019.

This work body also includes one single, “Up To You”, produced by Juno Award winner Rich Kidd at the Jessie Reyez writing camp. All of which are mixed by Howie Beck (Feist, Dragonette, Charlotte Day Wilson).

“I feel as though it’s the one thing that truly excites me when I wake up. When I hear a melody in my head and put the keys behind it and words to follow, it’s as if I can capture certain moments and make them last forever,” Tasha says

Tasha Angela is a Honey Jam 2017 alumni and performs on a few other Toronto stages, including showcases with Talent Nation, Second Nature Group, and The Cameron House. Until live performances return, you can stream your way through isolation with “Déjà Vu”.
