Meet the artist behind Toronto’s iconic nickname “The 6”, Jimmy Prime. Many believe Drake coined this term for the city, however, in 2016, Drake admitted that he was not the one who originated the name. It was actually a team effort by Oliver North, the OVO co-founder and Jimmy Prime. Jimmy Johnson, otherwise known by his stage name, Jimmy Prime, is also a recording artist from Toronto. He is part of the hip-hop group Prime Boys, which consists of Donnie, Jay Whiss and himself. This group has been putting out music since 2014 and has gained success from singles such as ‘Come Wit It’, ‘Hold Me Down’ and the most popular, ‘Tinted’ which was produced by another Canadian, Murda Beatz.
Jimmy Prime is also known for being featured in 6ix Rising, the documentary about Toronto’s rap scene, and Drake’s OVO Sound Radio. His latest release, ‘Trust Nobody’, is only 2 minutes long but evokes such a soft, late night melodious feel. Fans will only wish it was longer to linger within the tune.
