Brampton’s soul rapper/singer TOBi teamed up with British-Ghanaian producer, songwriter, and DJ, Juls in the making of TOBi’s new single “Dollas and Cents.”.
Signed by Sameplate Entertainment/RCA record, the 27-year-old musician TOBi has become a force on many music lovers’ radars over the years. Julian Nicco-Annan or “Juls” and TOBi were able to reframe and celebrate black joy as an act of resistance that can only be described as a diasporic triumph, while again proving that TOBi’s music has no limit.
The artist dipped into Afrobeat with this latest “Dollas and Cents,” never restricting himself to any one genre as we saw in his 2019 album STILL. TOBi views his style as “unapologetic soul music” that “explores your deepest feelings, fears, joys, and things that make you tick.”
TOBi says he loves tapping into his Nigerian heritage and connecting with the African diaspora. Who better than with Juls, one of the pioneer producers of African music alongside him.
“Juls is one of my favourite producers; We linked up at the end of last year, and the chemistry was instant! This song bridges that diaspora connection, Nigeria to Ghana to the UK to Canada”, says TOBi.
TOBi continually sets a new creative standard in Canadian music with his work, impressing us all with his 24 (Toronto Remix) video and reaching a new level with the “Dollas and Cents” visualizer. Niyi Adeogun and Camille Vincent created “Dollas and Cents” animations, detailing each style frame with chilling 2D illustrations to accessorize each beat.
